Can you afford to become a trader?

Like… how much is it really?

We get asked this a lot and we do have a general metric we go by to see if someone is ready to become a trader.

But before I get into that, what happens if you DON’T get into trading.

I’ll tell you what would have happened to me and let me know if this sounds familiar.

I used to be an engineer.

I was working anywhere from 45-90 hours a week (I don’t recall a single 40 hr week during those 8 years).

After that I became an entrepreneur specializing in the marketing space.

I was also working anywhere from 50-100 hours a week lol.

And ultimately that would have been the end of the story.

I would forever in my life work too much and miss out on precious family moments.

Back then I was missing sporting events, family dinners, and even holidays.

It was kinda crazy they gave me paid holidays but made me work anyway lol.

Fast forward to retirement I would find myself justifying how much of my time I devoted away from my family by making excuses like “I had to provide and pay bills”.

Don’t get me wrong… I’m a huge advocate for fathers being the primary provider.

All I’m saying is there’s a way to do it that doesn’t involve sacrificing so much.

So I would change the question from:

Can I afford to trade?

To…

Can I really afford NOT to trade?

The pros FAR outweigh the cons… FAR…

That said, a general rule of thumb is this:

If you cannot spare an extra $200-$300 per month in your budget, this is likely not the right time for you.

The reason for that number is people with a decent budget are less likely to make emotional decisions when trading real money.
